Details

A supercapacitor differs from other capacitors in the amount of capacitance the product can store, which is far greater than any other standard dielectric. The overwhelming majority of capacitors offer capacitance measured in picofarads (ceramics and film) or microfarads (tantalum and aluminum). The supercapacitor offers capacitance measured in farads. This places them squarely in a market that straddles both the aluminum electrolytic capacitor industry and the lead-acid and lithium ion battery industry. These two industries therefore represent the target markets for supercapacitors, and the technology is now receiving increased attention from both capacitor manufacturers and battery manufacturers. This study, from 1999, should be used as a benchmark for our later studies on the same subject.
